Interplay of Art, Mind and Reality

 Introduction

The interplay of art, mind, and reality is a fascinating dance that reflects how humans interpret, shape, and transcend their existence. The mind of an artist holds a profound secret, translating transcendent mental images into art. Art, in essence, is a reflection of the artist's mind. Human anatomy, as an example, is a highly sophisticated biological science. But what if I were to say that the human mind and the entirety of physical nature are the true sciences that hold every secret of the universe?

Spiritual beliefs and many religions suggest that human consciousness has extraordinary abilities, often limited by formal education—"the basics we learn in school"—and by what society teaches us to accept. For instance, if you ask a student, “What is 2+2?” they would simply answer, “4.” If you then ask, “Why is it 4 and not something else?” they might struggle to explain. This is because we are taught that 2+2 equals 4 without question or deeper understanding.

Our minds are conditioned to operate within these established teachings or beliefs, and the mind serves as the master that governs our physical bodies. My personal observation suggests that the mind is capable of achieving far greater feats than we currently comprehend. What limits the mind to this 3-dimensional space and 1 dimension of time? This thought is scientifically mind-boggling, isn’t it? We’ll explore this in greater depth in another blog post.

What the mind thinks and imagines, the body listens to and operates accordingly. Our brain functions are wired to work like a computer, where the mind acts as the control unit and the physical body as the mechanical robot it governs.

Philosophy is the highest science: Physics was once known as "natural philosophy," as it originated from philosophical endeavours to understand the physical world. For example, Aristotle, often regarded as the father of Western philosophy, emphasized the interconnectedness of philosophy and science. Similarly, Immanuel Kant and other Enlightenment thinkers explored philosophy’s pivotal role in shaping human understanding.

While philosophy aligns closely with science, it often struggles to convey profound insights through concise expression. This is where art takes the lead, transforming the higher principles of physiology and science into a tangible and emotional form. Philosophy delves deeply into abstract reasoning and logical frameworks, while art takes these complexities and translates them into sensory and expressive representations.

Through a single painting, poem, or melody, art can capture layers of meaning that philosophy or science may need volumes to articulate. It serves as a bridge—blending the rationality of science, the introspection of philosophy, and the raw emotions of the human experience. In this way, art becomes a unique language, capable of conveying truths that transcend both words and formulas.

Art serves as a bridge—merging the rationality of science, the introspection of philosophy, and the raw emotion of the human experience. It engages our physiology by appealing to the senses, while also stimulating intellectual and emotional responses. In this way, it becomes a language of its own, capable of expressing ideas and truths that transcend words and formulas. Here you may wonder why some art pieces around the world have such immense prices or are costly; there are even arts worth millions of dollars.

The Art

Art is the creative expression of how the mind perceives reality. Artists take inspiration from the world—its beauty, chaos, and complexity—and transform it into something uniquely personal. Whether it's through painting, music, literature, or dance, art captures both the tangible and the intangible, from the grandeur of the cosmos to the depths of human emotion.

At the same time, art has the power to reshape reality. Presenting alternate perspectives or challenging societal norms encourages viewers or participants to question what they know and see their world differently.

The Mind

The mind is the birthplace of art and the lens through which reality is experienced. It is where imagination and intellect converge to produce ideas that can be manifested as artistic creations. Art, in turn, stimulates the mind, fostering introspection, evoking emotions, and sparking intellectual dialogue.

The mind doesn't just create art—it also interprets it. Each viewer or participant brings their own experiences, beliefs, and emotions to their interpretation of art. This subjectivity adds another layer to the interplay, as a single piece of art can have countless meanings depending on the minds engaging with it.

The Reality

Reality serves as both the source and the mirror of art. It is the canvas upon which the mind projects its thoughts and feelings, and the stage where art comes to life. Reality inspires art, but it is also shaped by it. Historical movements, cultural shifts, and societal advancements are often born from artistic endeavours that challenge the status quo.

Art doesn’t merely imitate reality; it enriches it. It can represent alternate realities, providing an escape or a lens to imagine how things could be. Through this interaction, the boundaries between what is real and imagined blur, creating a richer tapestry of human experience.

Together, art, mind, and reality form a continuous cycle of creation, interpretation, and transformation. They remind us of the profound connections between our inner world and the external universe.

The Science Behind Art Paint

The science behind art paint is a fascinating blend of chemistry, physics, and material science. Paint is composed of several key elements, each playing a crucial role. Pigments provide colour and can be derived from natural minerals, plants, or synthetic compounds designed for vibrancy and stability. Binders hold the pigments together and ensure they adhere to surfaces, with linseed oil being a common binder in oil paints, and acrylic polymers used in acrylic paints. Solvents, such as water or turpentine, adjust the consistency and drying time, while additives modify texture, durability, or drying speed.

The perception of colour in paint is a direct result of light interaction. Pigments absorb and reflect specific wavelengths of light, creating the colours we see. Additionally, mixing colours follows the subtractive colour model, where cyan, magenta, and yellow interact to create new shades. This interplay of physics and chemistry brings colour to life in the world of art.

Physical properties like viscosity affect how paint spreads on a canvas. Drying and curing processes depend on the type of paint; for instance, oil paint dries through oxidation, while acrylic paint dries as the water evaporates. These characteristics influence how artists work with their chosen mediums and the final appearance of their artwork.

Preservation of paint and art relies heavily on science. Modern chemistry enables the creation of paints resistant to fading, cracking, and environmental factors, ensuring artworks endure through time. Techniques in art conservation also rely on understanding the chemical compositions of historical paints to restore and maintain priceless creations.

Innovations in paint technology continue to bridge the gap between science and art. Nanotechnology has enhanced the vibrancy and functionality of paints, while eco-friendly formulations are reducing the presence of harmful chemicals like volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

These advancements showcase how science and art go hand in hand, fostering creativity while respecting the environment.

Paint Art as a Reflection of Quantum Thinking

Paint art as a reflection of quantum thinking is an intriguing concept that reveals how the principles of quantum mechanics align with artistic creation. Just as particles can exist in multiple states simultaneously in quantum physics, the mind of an artist is filled with countless possibilities, ideas, and emotions. When the artist begins to paint, these possibilities "collapse" into a singular, tangible reality, akin to the wave function collapsing upon observation. The act of creation thus transforms potential into existence.

The connection between the artist and the viewer mirrors quantum entanglement. Just as entangled particles affect one another regardless of distance, the meaning of a painting is shaped through the interaction between the artist's intention and the viewer's interpretation. The artwork becomes a shared experience where the energy of the creator and the perception of the observer are intertwined.

Wave-particle duality, a cornerstone of quantum mechanics, also finds its counterpart in visual art. From a distance, a painting appears as a cohesive whole, much like a wave, but up close, its intricate details—the brushstrokes and textures—resemble the discrete particles that form the complete picture. This duality showcases how art operates both as a unified experience and as a collection of individual elements.

The vibrational energy and resonance of a painting reflect another quantum phenomenon. The choice of colours, patterns, and textures in the art can evoke specific emotions and stimulate the mind. These vibrations engage the observer on a deeper level, creating a sensory and emotional connection that aligns with the energy fields explored in quantum theories.

Finally, the artist serves as the quantum observer, making deliberate choices to shape their work. The selection of colours, techniques, and forms mirrors the process of observation in quantum mechanics, where the act of observing influences the outcome. In this way, painting art becomes a dynamic process—a translation of the mind’s infinite potential into a tangible and meaningful reality.

The Formula

Art is an incredible subject that anyone can learn. Like many other talents, art is a remarkable skill that can be cultivated over time. While some individuals are naturally gifted with artistic ability, creating stunning and beautiful works effortlessly, art is not limited to innate talent. It is also a science that combines principles such as light, color theory, perspective, and composition. With dedication, practice, and a passion for creativity, anyone can develop the ability to create meaningful and inspiring art : (Imagination + Emotion) × (Technique + Medium) + Observation = Artwork

  • Imagination: The artist’s ability to envision concepts, ideas, or themes.
  • Emotion: The feelings or message the artist wants to convey through their work.
  • Technique: The skills and methods used, such as brush strokes, layering, or blending.
  • Medium: The type of paint (oil, acrylic, watercolour, etc.) and tools (brushes, palette knives, etc.) the artist selects.
  • Observation: Careful study of the subject, whether real or abstract and how it inspires the artwork.
We are often constrained by the common belief that human brain functions are divided into two parts—artistic and scientific. However, I personally and strongly believe that the human brain is capable of integrating both aspects. Artistic and scientific abilities are not separate but part of a unified whole. Modern science has discovered emerging evidence that supports this perspective. Kadavullku Oru Kaditham

Personally, I have witnessed friends and acquaintances who are exceptionally skilled in mathematics also excel in arts and drawing. Coming from an engineering background and having extensive experience in the technical field of the machinery industry, I find it intriguing that I could also venture into acting. To test my abilities, I took part in a movie, and to my delight, I could act without flaw. I was impressed when I watched the movie I acted in—Kadavullku Oru Kadithama Malaysian film released in 2023 on the Astro Malaysian channel. It is an entertaining and humorous movie that can truly brighten your day.

I have a friend who is talented in both the arts and sciences. Thila teaches additional mathematics as a high school teacher, and some of her artwork is incredibly captivating and inspiring. Her ability to balance these two domains reflects the limitless potential of the human mind it carries. Here are some of her art examples:

Acrylic Painting 112 - Campfire

Acrylic Painting 113 - Women in swing, glowing moon

Acrylic Painting 113 - Women in swing, glowing moon
(Flash-offed, glowing in dark paintwork)

The glowing in dark paintwork is an amazing piece of artwork, it gives the impression of a woman observing the glowing nature of the full moon, admiring the environment while the swing is giving her a joy that captures her heart. This art is not just a paintwork but conveys the imagination of the artist while making this art beautifully capturing an ethereal scene, blending artistry with emotion. It vividly portrays a woman enveloped in the soft, luminous glow of the full moon, filled with wonder as she connects with the serene beauty of her surroundings. The swing beneath her adds a playful, almost childlike joy, perfectly complementing the tranquillity of the night. This piece doesn’t just depict a moment—it conveys a feeling of peace, introspection, and the heartwarming delight found in simple pleasures. This work is worthy as a diamond, a truly mesmerizing creation!

The Artistic Journey Of An Artist

Another good friend of mine is an incredibly passionate individual, someone anyone would love to know. Her journey from a research chemist to a passionate artist is nothing short of inspiring. With over two decades of experience in art, her works blend nature, intuition, and spirituality, creating pieces that go beyond aesthetics to capture deeper connections and energies.

About her ...

Mageswary Manickam has been practicing art for over two decades. She began drawing and painting at a very young age. Although she earned a bachelor's and master’s degree in chemistry and worked as a Research Chemist, her passion for art carved a unique path, leading her to embark on a deeper artistic journey. Her works are often inspired by nature, intuition, and spiritual experiences. She specialises in capturing moments on canvas through symbolism and abstract expression.

Mageswary emphasises the importance of creative art as a medium that voices the inner self. Mentored by the late artist Jeganathan Ramachandram, she has participated in various awareness projects for school children, incorporating art, sound vibrations, and mind-body fitness as tools to spark creativity. Additionally, she has experience training individuals to connect with their inner selves through creative art.

The Chemist turned Artist is now pursuing doctoral studies in Visual Art at the University of Malaya. Her transdisciplinary research explores the potential of creative art as a solution for complex societal issues, particularly depression, anxiety, and stress. Her work bridges creative art and the human experience in nature, offering a holistic perspective on the interconnectedness of these fields.

(Her Personal Biography) - Extraordinary Experiences Of Her Drawing Activity  - in her own words:

I would like to share two significant incidents. This incident happened four years ago. I created the following drawing spontaneously before going to sleep. I was sharing a room with my friend, who was fast asleep while I worked on the drawing next to her. The piece depicts a woman draped in cloth, immersed in river water. When she woke up and saw the drawing, she was shocked. She explained that, just the previous morning, she had gone to a river and was draped in cloth exactly as portrayed.

This incident shifted my perception of art, revealing that it is more than just beautiful creations to be displayed on walls or in exhibitions. For some, art can serve as a powerful tool to transfer unseen energies, memories, or messages that flow through us.

Art by Mageswary Manickam

This is the most recent incident involving a commissioned painting I created for an art collector. In the artwork, I included a set of jewellery featuring a thick bangle. Without referring to any designs, I intuitively let the design emerge on the canvas. When I delivered the painting to the collector, she was astonished to see the bangle design—it was identical to one she owns. This cannot be dismissed as mere coincidence; rather, it is a clear demonstration that, as an artist, my energy field is connected to that of the collector. Since she is also my friend, this connection was likely even stronger.

This experience made me realise that each of my drawings and paintings is a meditative act. Creativity has been shown to help practitioners access the theta state, which strengthens the link to the subconscious mind, allowing individuals to tap into their inner wisdom and retrieve information that might otherwise remain beyond conscious awareness.

Poem She Wrote About Her Arts

Title: Sunset
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
Dimension: 30cm x 30cm
Year: 2024

Oh! What a scenic view…
The sky's orange radiates at its most vibrant hue…
as the Tuesday sun says goodbye,

The single-tusked one swayed back and forth,
where the calm river flows underneath…
Trees whisper to Ekadanta in the evening breeze,

of rare and unheard stories…
The world stands still, and everyone's at ease.
I’m still wondering what those stories are…

Title: Within the Tree
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Dimension: 30cm x 30cm
Year: 2015

I saw a tree…

a mystical tree…
engraved with millions of memories…from the beginning of time…
a voice gently whispered…and showed me a sign…

“come to me, my dear…
perhaps a little closer…
and see me…he who resides within this tree…”
the little intuitive one…in shyness peeping through the branches…
whilst the indigenously proud one…
dancing before my eyes…like those neuronic sparks enlightening the brain…
losing itself to the beat of the cosmic symphony…

“step into my world…in surrender…
and let the sound vibration embrace you…
hence… you become the majestic tree…”

Conclusion

The interplay of art, mind, and reality beautifully embodies the complex dance between human creativity, perception, and the universe we inhabit. Art acts as a bridge, translating the abstract intricacies of the mind into tangible forms that reflect our understanding of reality. It captures emotions and ideas that transcend the boundaries of language, philosophy, and science, offering a unique way to explore and express the mysteries of existence.

Art, when viewed through the lens of quantum thinking, becomes an even more profound medium, mirroring the principles of superposition, entanglement, and duality. The artist’s mind, like a quantum observer, collapses infinite possibilities into a single creation that resonates with energy and meaning. Meanwhile, the viewer’s interpretation becomes entangled with the artist’s vision, forming a shared experience that transcends time and space.

Ultimately, art is more than just a form of expression—it is a reflection of the boundless potential of the human mind. It invites us to explore realities beyond what we see, encouraging us to question, imagine, and connect with the infinite mysteries of existence. This interplay reminds us that art, mind, and reality are not separate entities, but intertwined facets of the same wondrous whole.
